A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 25-year-old was stabbed to death last night.

The victim suffered fatal stab wounds in an incident in Gregson Street, Sacriston, at about 11pm on Saturday.

Police and paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

A 25-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody in Peterlee where he is being questioned by officers.

No other suspects are being sought at this time, police said.

A 25-year-old local woman was arrested this morning on suspicion of assisting an offender. She remains in custody in Darlington.

Detective Inspector Lee Gosling, who is leading the investigation, said: “We would like to reassure people that this was an isolated incident, and we do not believe there is any threat to the local community.

“There will be increased police patrols in the Gregson Street area, and a cordon will remain in place while our enquiries continue.

Residents said they heard a commotion and saw people out in the street then blue lights started to arrive.

One resident said: "It's dreadful but not the first violent death round here."

Another said: "There was someone shot in John Street about 20 years ago and there's still a memorial there."

A woman who lives opposite the alleyway added: "It's dreadful. I came out to have a cigarette last night and heard everyone out in the street."

Crime scene investigators are still on scene and police officers are guarding the cordon.
