NEWCASTLE (4-4-2):

6 Elliot: Had no chance with either goal, and commanded his area effectively, coming for a number of crosses

6 Yedlin: Worked tirelessly up and down the right-hand side, but might have been sent off for a second-half foul on Redmond

5 Lejeune: Blotted his copybook in a costly fashion as he brought down Long to concede a crucial penalty

7 Lascelles: Led by example at the heart of the back four once again and is the undisputed leader of the group

6 Manquillo: Did fairly well against the dangerous Tadic, but should have done much better as Gabbiadini scored his first goal

6 Ritchie: Was as dangerous as ever from set-pieces, and delivered the pass that helped set up Perez’s goal

8 HAYDEN: Justified his recall ahead of Merino with an excellent display – scored and made a crucial defensive block at the other end

6 Shelvey: Played in a much more prominent position in the closing stages, and helped Newcastle press for a third goal

7 Atsu: His blocked shot led to Hayden’s opener and his pace and dribbling ability caused problems all afternoon

8 Perez: Opened his account for the season with a clinical finish and ran himself into the ground closing down opponents once again

6 Joselu: Came within inches of scoring as his shot looped against the crossbar and led the line effectively throughout

6 Merino (for Perez, 63): Would probably have started if he hadn’t been on international duty and slipped straight into gear once he was introduced

5 Gayle (for Joselu, 68): His attempts to get behind the Saints defence were hampered when he injured his calf

Murphy (for Atsu, 82)

(not used): Darlow (gk), Clark, Gamez, Diame.

Man Of The Match: ISAAC HAYDEN – The Newcastle midfielder scored his first Premier League goal with a fine curled shot and was a dynamic midfield presence from first minute to last.
